Hixson Holds Architecture Walk and Construction Contest

June 2026

Last week, we announced the conclusion of two our annual initiatives with our Partner in Education school, St. Francis De Sales. During the month of May, Hixson associates also participated in another favorite: the Architecture Walk and Construction Contest! Through this program, fifth graders at the school learn more about the fields of architecture and design through hands-on experiential activities.

First, students were led by Hixson volunteers and their teaching staff on an architectural-focused walk through their historic East Walnut Hills neighborhood. Along the way, students took note of several buildings they would later construct, including an apartment building, a gas station, a restaurant, and an Art \Deco building.

The second phase took place back at school, where students competed in groups of five in a construction contest. Using provided materials, and with guidance from a Hixson coach, teams were given full creative freedom to design a city block featuring the buildings they observed on their walk. Completed structures were then judged by the principal and faculty members, with prizes awarded in multiple categories. All students, however, walked away with their first architect’s sketchbook!

The Architecture Walk and Construction Contest is just one of the many ways Hixson gives back to the communities in which we work and live. Visit here to learn more!
